New Year’s Resolution: Dance and feel the #Gwepaaa

Individuals seeking to get or stay fit in the new year might do better to start today rather than rely on a New Year’s resolution to shape up tomorrow.

Losing weight and getting fit and healthy are among the top five resolutions every year, even though most of winter’s great expectations wither by spring.

“The New Year’s resolution is a kind of grand, glorified, long-term goal that people, for societal reasons, tend to begin on the first day of the calendar year”

said Gregory Chertok, a sports psychology consultant with the American College of Sports Medicine.

Goals set because people feel they should make them tend to be pressure-filled, unrealistic and less likely to be accomplished, he says.

What are your New Year’s Resolutions? No matter what they are, we can assure you that dancing is at the top of most everyone’s list. The benefits of dance are numerous, and below are just a few to get you motivated to keep dancing through the new year:

  1. Bachata, Salsa or Kizomba could be a GREAT exercise. Get in shape while having fun- it sure beats the treadmill at the gym!
  2. Work your Latin dance classes into your budget. These are economically challenging times, as you all well know, but Kizomba dancing is an inexpensive way to give your life some balance. Your work hard day in and day out- reward yourself and de-stress in the process!
  3. This year make it a goal to expand your social circle. Meet new people, learn new things, expand your horizons! Salsa or Bachata dancing will give you confidence and allow you to meet others with common interests!
  4. Don’t be selfish, introduce a family member or friend to Latin dance.

‘Afro Latin’ dances like Salsa, Bachata, Tango or Kizomba have everything you would wish from a brand new hobby: exercise with a very fun approach, spent time together and meeting new individuals of various ages and walks of life. I might advise anyone thinking of trying a new hobby to just do it. What have you got to lose?”
